Project Description
Social Media and Emerging Tech Training for Female Filmmakers at Howard College
As part of the Isiphetu Programme supported by the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF), I had the opportunity to train an inspiring group of female entrepreneurs at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Howard College campus. These women, ranging in age from 20 to 70, are actively involved in the filmmaking industry and came together to learn how to leverage social media and cutting-edge technologies to promote their craft and reach wider audiences. We unpacked how tools like Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, Facebook Pages, and LinkedIn can be used strategically to build visibility for independent filmmakers in South Africa.
In addition to social media strategy, we explored how video technologies such as Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are shaping the future of storytelling and marketing. The session was highly interactive, offering both foundational techniques and forward-thinking trends that can help filmmakers stand out in a saturated digital landscape. As the film and content creation space becomes more competitive, learning to harness digital tools is no longer optional—it’s essential for sustainable growth in the creative industry.
